Flower Power!
Flower Power!

Hi all,

And welcome to the June edition of your Health Ezine.  Well I'm waiting patiently for my wildflower garden to bloom, it was planted out with the seeds at the end of April and I hoped, by now, there would be a fusion of colour but, no, it just looks like a garden of weeds at the minute but I'm hopeful!  I just want them because they are beautiful but have a wee look at Why Wildflowers Matter.

As Father's Day was celebrated in June and a dedicated week given to Men's Health we look at the Man MOT! and if the sun decides to visit Ireland best to be sunsafe!

So started on a bit of a health kick this week, fell into bad eating habits, I put it down to it being a cold summer, anyway, started to use coconut oil for cooking to boost my metabolism - take a look at Coconut Oil Uses & Benefits.

Also why not try out the recipe for these little coconutty joys at the top, they give you a shot of energy and I hope you enjoy your school's out treat!

Until next time,

Sandra

Superman!

One man in five dies before he’s 65. But it's not just men in mid-life, it’s young men too, the life expectancy for men is shorter than it is for women – and they are much more likely to suffer a premature death. And the causes are not just physical, men need to open up about their mental health.  Knowing a few simple things can make all the difference to improve men's health.  Some important contributing factors are that men are more susceptible to:

  • cardiovascular disease
  • are more likely to drink and smoke to excess
  • are less likely to have a good exercise  regimen
  • have a higher suicide rate than women
  • have a higher mortality rate from cancer than women because they often present late!

You need to move more, stop being sedentary and get an hour's moderate exercise every day, take charge of your health gents!, the sooner, the better, exercise one hour a day or be dead 24 hours a day! and have a look at some Foods to Boost Male Health.

Suns Out?

Shade Up!
Shade Up!

Maybe the only sun some of us will see this year will be on Love Island!

But just in case the sun does decide to appear, best to be prepared, apparently there is a heat wave predicted to close June - whoop!

So while  it's nice to enjoy any sunshine we do get, you should be aware that too much time in the sun is dangerous to your skin and lead to skin cancer in later life.  So it's important to take care in the sun and protect yourself!

Over-exposure to the sun’s rays can cause serious damage to your body, with two common types of cancers. One being non-melanoma, and melanoma, which is by far the most dangerous skin cancer.

So for any of you heading to the sun or if this heat wave materialises have a look at How To Cope In Hot Weather.

And remember in a heat wave, you may get dehydrated and this can lead to heat exhaustion, and if untreated can lead to sunstroke which can cause serious damage to your body.  So can what you eat actually keep you cooler and help protect against sun damage .

Too much sun can damage the retina in your eyes. As with skin damage, it is the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun which causes problems. ... Even on cloudy days we should wear sunglasses to reduce the ultraviolet radiation reaching our eyes., so get the shades on folks!

Who Cares!

Caring is something that will affect each and every one of us in our lifetime, whether we become a carer, or need care ourselves.

Carers often find it challenging to take care of their own wellbeing whilst caring. Its impact on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work should not be underestimated.

Caring for someone can be extremely complicated, whether you're grappling with the benefits system or considering how to pay for care. There are lots of extra costs that can come with caring and giving up work or choosing to reduce working hours can lead to money worries.

Sometimes a few words from someone who understands your situation can be a lifeline. Being a carer can be difficult and isolating, so speaking to someone who knows what you are going through can make a big difference.

Caring can range from a few hours a week, such as picking up prescriptions and preparing meals, to providing emotional or personal care day and night!!!

But without the right support caring can have a significant impact. Evidence shows that caring can cause ill health, poverty and social isolation - so it's vitally important that you look after yourself as a carer...

Disposable Clothes!

Is anyone else unsure about what season we're currently in!? and what to wear!

Some days you could be forgiven for wearing a jumper - did you know you can get summer boots, seriously!   But, apparently, the weather is on the up so lets have a look at some Summer Fashion Trends.  Headbands, scrunchies and bows have made a hugh come back in 2019, but been there, done that, back in the 80s so over to the young 'uns for this.  In these days of social media, clothes have become somewhat throwaway, due to everybody seeing what you wear to a wedding or event, so you couldn't possibly wear it again!, apparently you should be embarrassed if you wear the same outfit twice!

Now, as the temperatures rise in the next couple of days, the very thought of your office wardrobe makes you start to sweat but the alternatives are not "HR approved" so check out Cute Work Outfits to Wear This Summer!
